Galveston is a barrier island where the highest natural ground sits only 20 feet above sea level. After the 1900 hurricane, the city pumped in dredged sand to raise the eastern half of the island by as much as 17 feet, so most slabs poured since then sit on engineered fill, not natural soil. The water table stays close to the surface, humidity runs high most of the year, and salt air off the Gulf works on bare concrete and unsealed metal alike. Hurricane Ike's 2008 storm surge went over the 17-foot seawall and flooded the University of Texas Medical Branch and the county courthouse, so building owners here have already seen what standing water does to an untreated floor. Demand splits three ways: UTMB's hospital and lab buildings and the Port of Galveston's warehouse and terminal space need floors that hold up under chemical exposure and heavy equipment, the island's hotel, restaurant, and retail base (more than 2,000 businesses) need commercial coatings that survive salt air and foot traffic, and homeowners with garages or short-term rental units want a floor that will not blister the next time water rises.
